# Leaving Cert Spanish HL — H1 Tier 1 study plan

Built from: SEC HL Spanish papers 2021–2025, Studyclix topic-frequency data, Irish Times paper reviews, and the official SEC marking schemes.

> **Spanish HL is not Bio/Bus.** The paper format (which questions appear) is more predictable than the *topics* — almost every paper has the same skeleton, so Tier 1 is mostly about **drilling the recurring task formats** with the **recurring themes**.

---

## Paper structure (HL, ≈ 220 marks, 2h30, old syllabus 2021–2025)

| Section | Q | Task | Marks | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | Q1 | Comprehensión literaria (literary text + Qs in Spanish) | 60 | T1 |
| I | Q2 | Comprensión periodística (journalistic text + Qs in Spanish) | 60 | T1 |
| II | Q3 | Short production (~50 words): diary / blog / postcard / email | 30 | T1 |
| II | Q4 | Formal letter (~75–100 words) | 40 | T1 |
| II | Q5 | Opinion piece on stimulus (~120 words) | 30 | T1 |
| Listening | — | Separate paper, ~40 min | 80 | T1 |
| Oral | — | Separate, ~12 min, 25% of total | — | T1 |

**Everything on this page is Tier 1.** With Spanish HL there's no Tier 2/3 — every section is asked every year. The question is just *how well* you write, not *whether* a topic shows up.

---

## Q5 — Opinion piece (the highest-leverage drill)

You're asked to write ~120 words giving your opinion on a stimulus (usually a quote, headline, or statistic). The recurring stimulus themes 2021–2025:

| Theme | Years | Sample stimulus type |
|---|---|---|
| **Tecnología / redes sociales** | 2021, 2022, 2024, 2025 | "Los jóvenes pasan demasiado tiempo en el móvil" |
| **Medio ambiente / cambio climático** | 2021, 2023, 2024 | "El cambio climático es la mayor amenaza" |
| **Educación / sistema escolar** | 2022, 2023, 2025 | "Los exámenes no miden la inteligencia" |
| **Juventud (alcohol, drogas, presión)** | 2021, 2024 | "Los jóvenes irlandeses beben demasiado" |
| **Trabajo / paro juvenil** | 2022, 2025 | "Es difícil encontrar trabajo siendo joven" |

**Marking rubric (out of 30):**
- Communication ≈10
- Language range ≈10
- Accuracy ≈10

**H1 formula:**
1. **Intro** — restate the stimulus + your stance (*En mi opinión / Yo creo que / A mi modo de ver*).
2. **Argument 1** with example (*Por ejemplo / Un caso claro es*).
3. **Argument 2** with example.
4. **Counter-argument acknowledged** (*Sin embargo / No obstante*).
5. **Conclusion** restating opinion (*En conclusión / Para terminar*).

Drill this skeleton with every theme above.
